Bet on Soldier Files Closes - Site News

Well the time has come for us to close our Bet on Soldier Files site and keep it up as an archive. This now means that the site won't be updated anymore. The site may be revived if there'd ever be a Bet on Soldier 2, under a different publisher.
We thank you for visiting the site and it's a shame to see that Bet on Soldier didn't do as well as people hoped it would, it's sad to see how publishers treat their million dollar investments.
Thanks for visiting and remember you can still download files from here if you need to.

Digital Jesters has been transformed in The DJ Group. The financially troubled publisher has agreed to a 5 million dollar investment of Myriad Interactive. "We've big plans for the DJ Group," said Landi. "We've already set up our infrastructure, and it's our intention that this new group will quickly grow through expansion and acquisition into a real major player." There has been no word on whether or not The DJ Group will partner up again with the company that developed Bet on Soldier.

Bet on Soldier Support Continues! - Official
  Posted by: Bluehair on 10-27-2005 @ 03:48
This News Item has been viewed 5276 times!
A representative from Digital Jester has posted up on the official BoS forums that yesterday's statement from German publisher Frogster was completely unfounded and that support for Bet on Soldier would continue as normal, just like any other game.

Concerning recent news that all support on Bet on Soldier has been stopped, is completely false.

Both us (Digital Jesters) and Bet on Soldier Developer (Kylotonn) still will continue support for Bet on Soldier: Blood Sport with patches, compatibility issues and anything else that crops up in the future.

There has been a misunderstanding on the side of German Publisher, Frogster and there is to be an announcement by them very soon to clear up their position on the game.

To say again. Digital Jesters and Kylotonn have not stopped supporting Bet on Soldier and will not stop supporting for the near future.

Bet on Soldier Support Discontinued - Official
      Posted by: Ronnie on 10-25-2005 @ 16:31 - Source: bos-game
This News Item has been viewed 5112 times!
The German Bet on Soldier website has announced that support for Bet on Soldier is discontinued as of today. Reason being different views between the pusblish and the developer team. This is an incredible tough time for the developer team and they're going to need eachother to pull through. This means the planned 1.3 patch and the dedicated server tool are no longer being worked on and thus they will never be released to the public. The game is stable in its current state and can be played without any problems. The 1.3 patch was only meant to fix some minor bugs. The release-cup which was announced will merge with leaguez.com, prize being a new computer. For more information about the league click here

I guess this also means the modding tools will never be released and thus the community can not help to bring back some life into the game. Sad day this is indeed. The game had so much potential and it didn't deserve this at all. It is practically unheard of that support is discontinued so close after release. Bet on Soldier was just like the kid who sat in the back of the class and didn't say much, but had such a great heart if you'd just take the time to get to know him.

Here is GamePro's take on the game. They gave it a good 3.5 out of 5 rating, and their review isn't too bad. Take a look:

    Quote:
"Money is the root of all evil," or so says the clich?d monologue in Bet on Soldier. In spite of the uninspiring The Running Man storyline, the game adds a unique, bottom-line driven twist to the saturated FPS genre that, at least for a brief moment, conceals the monotony of headshots.

Gamespot also reviewed Bet On Soldier, and they didn't like it to say the least. They gave the game a 3.1 out of 10. Like IGN, though, the general public disagrees, with the voting public giving the game a decent 5.5 out of 10 and reviewers (those that wrote their own reviews on that website) gave it a 6.1 out of 10. It seems, so far, that the theme of these reviews is to not trust them. smile

Here is an excerpt from their review:
    Quote:
Bet on Soldier is a sci-fi-themed first-person shooter that takes place in a crazy war-torn world where the primary form of televised entertainment is one-on-one gladiatorial battles that break out in the middle of an otherwise normal battle. While that might sound like just the sort of gameplay and plot hook that might drag in all of you people waiting patiently for a game based on The Running Man, Bet on Soldier is a collection of half-baked ideas wrapped in a buggy mess of an engine, and the end result is a very bad game, overall.

Each mission begins with a soldier loadout screen where you can purchase weapons, various types of armor, and mercenaries to assist you along the way. You'll also choose which champions you'd like to face in each mission. This is where the whole Bet on Soldier concept comes into play. When you encounter these champions, the game breaks into a cutscene that plays the intro of a TV show called Bet on Soldier. These battles are treated like a televised sport, but they boil down to your trying to win as quickly as possible to earn more money. The solo battles are dull and fairly lifeless, plus they're jarring and intrude on the rest of the game.

Bet On Soldier Review: Firing Squad - Reviews

Here is another review of the game done by the folks at FiringSquad.com. They seemed to have positive things to say about the game, but they also discuss the stability problem of the game that has probably killed the game ratingswise with some publications.

Here is an excerpt from their story:

    Quote:
Innovation in FPS’s has been slow the last few years as developers have struggled to make large leaps forward brought about by select elements from the past like mouselook and leaning. Lately it has seemed as if most games are made with the “bigger, better, more” mentality. Better graphics, bigger guns, and more players on a server.

But publisher Digital Jesters together with French developer Kylotonn Entertainment are betting that they do have the next big leap forward – The Casino FPS, officially called Bet On Soldier.

No, Bet On Soldier doesn’t feature gunfights amidst roulette tables, one armed bandits, or 38-year old cocktail waitresses with bad teeth; it takes place in a future of Running Man-style television shows where governments and citizens resolve conflicts and make fortunes through wagers placed on mercenaries like your character – Nolan Daneworth. I could go into more of the story, but I assure you, you won’t care or feel like it is anything new.

Bet On Soldier Review: IGN - Reviews

    Yay!

Here are the first of a series of reviews of Bet on Soldier of which are long overdue in reporting. I will also make a review of my own of the game. Stay tuned for that.

This review is by IGN. Their overall rating of the game was 7.0 out of 10. This rating is the average of 2 ratings: a press average (their rating) and a reader average (the average voted on by their members). The press average for this game was 5.0, while the reader average was 8.9, meaning that the general gaming audience doesn't really agree with the critics on this one.

Here is an excerpt of that article:

    Quote:
Shooters sure have gotten pretty these days. Sometimes you can make it look really good and get away with mediocre gameplay, but a franchise doesn't get that luxury too often. Other times, you can have an average-looking game with great play value, but the demand often favors bells and whistles. With shooters being such a competitive market, and with increasing competition on the console side, a dev house really has to bust its butt to get some footing and hold onto it.

Enter Bet on Soldier: Blood Sport, created by Kylotonn, a Parisian developer previously known for Iron Storm, from which BoS draws inspiration here and there. There's none of the sniper aggravation, though, and the physics engine and character models have been completely overhauled. However, the normal mapping on the character models carries over the "plastic action figure" we've seen before, with an apparent layer of sweat that makes everyone gleam at close range. Overall, though, BoS is a good-looking game, with some fairly subtle light bloom, huge zones, and detailed terrain. Death is also gruesome, which may be good or bad depending on your tastes. The splatters of blood and the ragdoll death animations will probably be an acquired taste, but it's a taste most of us shooter fans have gotten used to by now. BoS is a pretty chunky game, in fact, but there's no dismemberment, just sprays of blood and falling bodies.

One comment on the article, though. The writer is not entirely sure about the storyline, so it's not defined well, though he gives it his best shot.
As a result, I may post the full backstory of the game if you want, though not as a news post.
